Leaves larger than in cultivated forms and whorls of flowers fewer. This form is more common than the type, and occurs throughout the whole range of the species.
This species is named after the Balearic Islands, groups of islands in the Mediterranean Sea located east of Spain.
According to the Dictionary of Gardening from the Royal Horticultural Society, Lonicera balearica (Dum.-Cours.) DC is a separate species.
