Lonicera japonica ‘Purpurea’

Lonicera japonica 'Purpurea' (USA before 1990)

A very robust cultivar much like `Halliana´. Young shoots and leaves reddish, this is the influence of var. chinensis. Leaves with a green-purple cast on top and more purplish below. Veins purplish red on the underside, on the upper side only the midrib purplish red. Leaves often turn dark purple in autumn and winter. The flowers are purple on the outside and white on the inside.
The berries are dark coral-red at first, later black. An excellent climber for covering large spaces, tall fences and tree stumps. Makes good ground cover.
